When we first arrived in Charleston, I was immediately captivated by the city’s charm. The historic buildings, cobblestone streets, and moss-draped trees made it feel like stepping into another world. While we stayed just outside the Historic District at the Moxy Charleston Downtown, we still felt right in the heart of it all. The hotel’s vibrant, modern design was a hit with the kids, who loved the colorful spaces and fun details. The rooftop terrace became our go-to spot to unwind after busy days exploring the city—a perfect place to watch the sunset and soak in Charleston’s laid-back vibes.

Cooling Off in Charleston’s Famous Fountains

Visiting Charleston in the heat of summer meant one thing: we needed to cool off, and fast! Thankfully, the fountains at Waterfront Park were just what we needed.

We first made our way to the iconic Pineapple Fountain, and the kids couldn’t believe their luck. It wasn’t just a beautiful landmark—it was also a splash pad! They eagerly jumped in, joining a dozen other kids splashing and laughing. The joy was contagious, and it gave us grown-ups a chance to sit back and take in the stunning harbor views.

From there, we wandered down to the Waterfront Park Fountain, a larger, equally inviting splash area. The kids were in heaven, running through the jets of water and cooling off from the summer heat. By the time they were thoroughly worn out, we dried them off, grabbed some snacks, and continued our adventure through the city. After a long, adventure-filled day, we made our way back to the Moxy Hotel to unwind. We slipped into comfy clothes and headed up to the rooftop terrace, where the stunning views and relaxed atmosphere instantly made us feel at ease. While the kids happily played in the open spaces, we moms took a well-deserved break, lounging in the cozy cabanas with refreshing beverages in hand. It was the perfect way to recharge, share a few laughs, and soak in the magic of Charleston under the evening sky.

Discovering the Wonders of the South Carolina Aquarium

The next day, we decided to dive into Charleston’s aquatic side with a visit to the South Carolina Aquarium. It was an experience that was equal parts fun and educational, making it a win for the whole family.

We started with the Great Ocean Tank, a massive exhibit featuring sharks, sea turtles, and countless colorful fish. The kids were mesmerized by the underwater world and kept pointing out their favorite creatures. The Touch Tank was another highlight, giving them a chance to feel starfish, urchins, and other sea creatures up close.

One of the most memorable stops was the Sea Turtle Care Center. Here, we learned about the aquarium’s efforts to rescue and rehabilitate injured sea turtles. The kids were fascinated by the stories of these amazing creatures and loved seeing them up close.

Another unique feature was The Trading Post. Visitors can bring in their own nature finds—like shells, rocks, or fossils—and trade them for cool natural artifacts. The kids couldn’t stop talking about what they’d bring next time if we lived nearby. It’s such a clever way to get kids excited about nature!

Exploring the Magic of Driftwood Beach on Edisto Island

One of the most unforgettable parts of our trip was visiting Driftwood Beach on Edisto Island. Just a short drive from Charleston, this hidden gem feels like stepping into a storybook. The beach is dotted with weathered trees and twisted driftwood, their branches stretching out toward the sea in a way that’s both haunting and beautiful. The kids were in awe, running around and climbing on the massive fallen trees while pretending they were pirates exploring a deserted island. They spent hours searching for shells, unique pieces of driftwood, and other treasures washed up by the tides. Every find felt like uncovering a little bit of magic. Driftwood Beach is the perfect blend of adventure and tranquility—a place where kids can let their imaginations run wild and adults can soak in the beauty of nature’s artwork.

When we weren’t splashing in fountains or exploring the aquarium, we filled our time with the endless delights of Charleston.

• King Street Cafés: After our morning adventures, we stopped for coffee and treats at The Rise Coffee Bar, a cozy café with delicious pastries and fresh-brewed coffee. The kids happily devoured muffins while we recharged for the rest of the day.

• Family-Friendly Restaurants: For dinner, we headed to Fleet Landing, a waterfront restaurant offering fresh seafood and stunning views. The shrimp and grits were a standout, and the kids devoured their mac and cheese while watching boats drift by.
